A country where waterfalls fall from every cliff, beaches are made of black sand and diamonds, and the ground literally steams. Iceland feels like driving through another planet.
Jökulsárlón & Diamond Beach
The long drive east from Reykjavik is a highlight in itself, but nothing prepares you for the glacier lagoon: blue icebergs calving off Breiðamerkurjökull and drifting toward the ocean. Right across the road, Diamond Beach, where ice chunks glitter on jet-black sand like scattered gems. We stayed until our fingers froze. Worth it.
Our favourite part
Seals popping up between the icebergs like curious dogs, completely unbothered by our boat.
Whale Watching in Húsavík
The self-declared whale capital of Iceland delivered: a family-run wooden boat, hot cocoa with cinnamon, and humpbacks breaching in golden evening light. Húsavík's operators are researchers first, guides second, you feel the difference.
Sky Lagoon & Reykjavik Evenings
After days of wind and waterfalls, the 7-step Sky Lagoon ritual (cold plunge, sauna with an infinity edge over the North Atlantic, scrub, steam) was pure restoration. Pair it with lamb soup and a stroll through colourful downtown Reykjavik.
Northern Lights Over the City
On our last night the forecast cleared, and the aurora bus drove us just out of town where green curtains unfurled across the sky while we sipped hot cocoa under blankets. The perfect goodbye.
Final Thoughts
Iceland isn't a cheap weekend. It's an expedition that pays you back tenfold. Do the south coast properly, hug a hot dog at Bæjarins Beztu, and never trust the forecast more than five minutes ahead.
