The Algarve is where golden limestone cliffs collapse into impossibly blue water, where hidden sea caves glow with natural skylights, and where every beach feels like it was designed for a postcard. We spent a week chasing the coastline and couldn't get enough.
Benagil Sea Cave
The crown jewel of the Algarve. We kayaked in from Benagil beach at sunrise; the cave was empty and the morning light poured through the circular opening in the ceiling, illuminating the golden walls and turquoise pool below. It felt like being inside a cathedral built by the ocean.
You can also reach it by boat from Lagos or Portimão, but the kayak experience at dawn, with just our guide and the sound of waves, was unforgettable.
Ponta da Piedade, Lagos
Towering rock formations, natural arches, and hidden grottos carved by centuries of Atlantic waves. We took a small boat tour that ducked into caves too narrow for bigger vessels. The guide pointed out the "Camel" and the "Kissing Rocks", each formation more dramatic than the last.
Our favourite part
Swimming into a tiny sea cave only accessible at low tide, floating in crystal-clear water while sunlight filtered through a crack in the rocks. Pure magic.
Praia da Marinha
Regularly voted one of the most beautiful beaches in Europe, and it earns every accolade. The double arch rock formation is iconic, the water is turquoise and calm, and the cliff-top trail above offers jaw-dropping views at every turn. We spent an entire afternoon here and reluctantly left at sunset.
Lagos: Charming Old Town
Beyond the beaches, Lagos has a beautifully preserved old town with cobblestone streets, whitewashed buildings draped in bougainvillea, and lively squares packed with restaurants. We wandered the medieval walls, browsed local markets, and ate the freshest grilled sardines of our lives at a tiny harbour-side tavern.
Final Thoughts
The Algarve exceeded every expectation. It's not just a beach destination. It's a place where nature put on a show every single day. We left with sandy shoes, sun-kissed skin, and a firm promise to return. If you love coastlines, this is your paradise.
